jelly shrooms
Jelly shrooms
Had an idea to combine jelly fish and mushrooms together into a new fantastical creature. Please scroll down for a full breakdown.
Programs: Maya, Photoshop, Substance Painter, Substance Designer
Responsible for: Texturing, Compositing, Lighting, Modeling (except for the log)
Breakdown
brainstorming and references
My idea was making a mushroom where the cap is a sea nettle jelly fish and it would drift off into the air. This project posed 2 challenges for meas I have not really done much simulation and finding a jellyfish model was extremely hard. So I had to tackle those 2 challenges myself. Before I started with the project, I gathered references of objects I think would be relevant for me. The bioluminescence of the mushroom and the glow of the jellyfish caught my eye.
Modeling and uving
Having gathered the references, I hopped right onto modeling. I used cloth simulation to achieve the ruffles of the sea nettle jellyfish. I downloaded a log model from TurboSquid as I want it to be high-poly and detailed to a certain degree. I then assembled the scene and started UV-ing the assets.
MAking texture samples
After I have prepared my models for texturing, I started making texture samples on Photoshop to be brought into Substance Painter.
texturing, Look development, & lighting
With the samples completed, the process continues on Substance Painter. Using the samples I created, I made and painted textures according to the references I found earlier in the process. Here are the maps I made for all the assets in the scene. After generating the maps, I then plugged it into the Arnold AI Standard Surface Shader. Please find the nodes, maps, and values I used for each shader below!
I did a quick shader quilt to test out the materials and gauge what I needed to adjust.
I played around with the roughness value, the lighting, and did a quick compositing test to see how everything looked together
Compositing
After deciding on the final lighting and look development, I rendered out the sequence and composited it in Nuke to improve the look. I also used it to apply ZDefocus to the scene. With that, I have finished making my project!
